Frank Thomas

To my eye there are zero formulas to detect in his work. Every one of his characters moves and acts in a unique way. That way of working takes not only great analysis but a ton of passion.”- Andreas Deja

BAMBI CONCEPT ART

This beautiful Vis A Dev art can be found in the 1990 book Bambi, The Story and the Film, by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston. The artist is not specified though, so we don’t know who the author of this magnificent art is.
There is a dreamy use of light and shading; it almost seems blurry, as if in a dream, which sets for a magical mood.

“It was a difficult picture because we’d never done any animal with anatomy and Walt wanted the deer to be very believable.” - Ollie Johnston, Animator

“Walt’s idea was to get all of his artists to draw in the way of the old masters and then put them to animation. They started bringing in real animals and having them on the sound stages and it became a zoo in itself.” - Mel Shaw, Animator

MARC DAVIS, THE ANIMALS MASTER ANIMATOR
Marc Davis achieved human expressions on a realistic fawn.
Frank Thomas has even admitted that the animators couldn’t have come up with he same results if it wasn’t for Marc’s thorough and extremely useful research.
Characters like the ones in Bambi could easily look overly sweet and kitschy, but when you have artists involved with Marc’s caliber, that’s not going to happen. Instead the film’s cast is portrayed with unparalleled elegance and beauty.

TOP 12 MOMENTS OF DISNEY ANIMATION?

The mexican magazine CinePREMIERE listed their 50 top moments in Walt Disney Studios animation history, according to them (according to writer Luis Miguel Cruz). These above are only their top twelve, you can see them all here.

Even though I don’t personally agree with all of his top decisions (or many of them), the fact that the writer and magazine took the time to appreciate Walt Disney’s legacy, from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to Wreck-it Ralph, and choose those key moment that display amazing craftsmanship in animation, as well as loving and lasting characters and memories is amazing.

Do you agree with these top twelve? What would your choices be?
