DISNEY FUN FACT- Maleficent’s colors
No, you are not going color blind. And no, the picture is not painted wrong. Originally, Marc Davis, Maleficent’s supervising animator had decided that the colors for this character would be black and red, based in a concept he saw in a book on medieval art. He felt strongly about those colors, but background and color stylist Eyvind Earle had other ideas and settled for black with purple. Personally, I don’t think I would have liked the black and red too much, but who am I to question the great Marc Davis.
Malficent is not the only villainess rocking purple, as it appears to prominently appear with so many fellow villains, like The Little Mermaid’s Ursula, Snow White’s Queen Grimhilde (also known as The Evil Queen), The Princess and the Frog’s Dr. Facilier, Pocahontas Governor Radcliffe, The Emperor’s New Groove Yzma, and quite a few others.
