FROM STORYSKETCHES TO ROUGH ANIMATION
Studying the transition from storyboards to animation is always very interesting, as you can see from many of the roughs vs animation pictures I post. The story is supposed to inspire the artist to bring a particular character or scene to life. Storyboard sketches can be either a loose suggestion or a sketch with the scene and character completely staged and highlighting its personality and movement. Nevertheless, it is always the animator’s job to make it come to life!
This storyboard (by unknown) shows Maleficent just before she sent of the raven to find the lost princess. The improvement of the animation by Marc Davis is quite evident. The staging was shifted to a 3/4 camera angle, the characters seem closer and they seem to interact more intimately with each other. There is a movement of the characters in three dimensions. Mark rocks it!
