This is is the part I always used to rewind when I watched The Lion King VHS with my brother. Rafiki’s shriek and face were just too funny!

ROBIN HOOD; its origin with Ken Anderson

Ken Anderson had the best time animating the anthropomorphic animals in Song of the South, so when the idea of translating the classic tale of Robin Hood came to the Walt Disney Studios, he proposed it should be told with animal characters. The idea was an instant hit with his fellow animators and after, completing early design work, Ken presented his research to some of Disney’s top talents.
This photo was taken during a lively meeting which included, from left to right, director Woolie Reitherman, Milt Kahl, Ken, Dave Michener (a former assistant to Kahl, who had moved into story), Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston and writer Larry Clemmons.
You can see all of Ken’s work in the back. Although Ken was in charge on the concept art for each character, Milt Kahl did the final designs for the animation of the film.
In my opinion, Milt knocked it out of the park with characters like Allan-a-Dale or Lady Kluck. Nonetheless, although Ken’s version of Friar Tuck looks more like a badger, I prefer Milt’s and Milt’s Sir Hiss lacks a charm I see in Ken’s concept art.
Don’t misunderstand me, I idolize both animators and believe this film is a treasure in the history of animation.
